A brush fire along the Bergen/Rockland border temporarily closed the Ramapo Reservation after sending a column of smoke skyward that could be seen in Westchester. A live wire smoldering on a tree apparently ignited the blaze on Brandt Road in the Ramapo Mountains in Hillburn, bringing firefighters from both counties, shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 15. UPDATE: A 59-year-old gasoline tanker driver from Paterson was killed in a massive fireball during a crash on Route 287 near the New York State border in Mahwah early Saturday, New Jersey State Police confirmed. A series of explosions were heard after the rig rolled and burst into flames on a notorious stretch of the southbound highway near Route 17 and the New York State Thruway at 6:47 a.m., NJSP Sgt. Police: Rockland Patron Assaults Old Tappan Restaurant Employee Over Request For Water
A Rockland man surrendered to police who charged him with beating a worker at a Bergen County Italian restaurant, authorities said. Luca Saggio, 46, of Stony Point asked the passing Bosfa Restaurant employee for water and didn’t like the response, witnesses told responding officers, Old Tappan Police Chief Joseph J. Tracy said. Saggio then “followed the employee into the kitchen of the restaurant and punched him in the head,” Tracy said. The employee suffered “a significant injury to his eye and head area,” the chief said. In the back is a 10-year-old pug, Rocco, whose family listed him on Craigslist "like a piece of furniture," said Pagano, a longtime detective sergeant with the Paramus Police Department.
