A South River man was indicted after he was accused of sexually assaulting a second child about 25 years ago, authorities said. A grand jury indicted 45-year-old Robert Wisiak on first-degree aggravated sexual assault. Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Julia Alonso announced the indictment in a news release on Monday, July 29. Wisiak, who used to live in Keansburg, was arrested on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023. A retired Newark police officer died and another victim was severely burned in a South River home explosion, officials tell Daily Voice. Kevin Gilbert, a 26-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, died in the mysterious explosion around 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, South River Mayor Peter Guindi tells Daily Voice. Police ID South River Driver Killed In South Brunswick Crash
South Brunswick police have released the name of the driver killed in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday, April 23. Curtis Bryant 3rd, 65, of South River was driving a Nissan Maxima on Route 535 when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole, police said. The crash occurred just before 6 a.m. The investigation is still active and anyone with information is asked to call the lead investigator PFC Jason Gassman at (732) 329-4000 ext. 743.

Some South Jersey school districts are canceling classes or delaying the start of school before a winter storm that's expected on Tuesday, Feb. 13. As an extra safety precaution, clear backpacks are being distributed free in a Central Jersey school district. "We will be implementing the mandatory use of clear backpacks starting this upcoming school year for all of our schools," South River Public Schools Superintendent Sylvia Zircher wrote in a letter to parents.
