'Staggering' 10,138 Coronavirus Deaths In NJ; Surgeries, July 7 Election Next Steps Reopening
New Jersey crossed a grim, "staggering" milestone, state officials said. A total of 10,138 state residents have died from coronavirus, Gov. Phil Murphy said at a Friday afternoon briefing. That total includes 201 deaths confirmed during the past 24 hours, he said. New Jersey is second only to New York states with total COVID-19 deaths. "That is a staggering number,''' Murphy said, sharing his condolences with friends and family of all coronavirus victims. More than half the state's total deaths have occurred among patients, and staff, at NJ's more than 500 nursing homes, veterans hom…

Murphy Will 'Pull Brakes' On Beaches If Coronavirus Cases Spike
Although New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has been slowly reopening the state, he is prepared to close it right back up if coronavirus cases start to spike, he said. "We're doing it in steps and we're trying to monitor each one," he said in an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo. "But if we have to pull the brakes, we will" Murphy earlier that day announced Jersey Shore beaches and lakes across the state would begin opening May 22, in time for Memorial Day Weekend. On Wednesday, Murphy OK'd the reopening of nonessential retail with curbside pickup, and restart of nonessential construction. Gu…

Social distancing guidelines will be in place, the governor said, urging residents to wear face masks whenever possible. Playgrounds, rides, arcades, games, water fountains, picnic areas and water play areas will remain closed. "The Shore is central to our Jersey identity and we want to ensure tha…

Gov. Phil Murphy announced he will be signing an executive order to reopen nonessential businesses and restart nonessential construction in New Jersey effective 6 a.m. Monday, May 18. Drive-thru events such as movies, drive-by graduation ceremonies and religious services will also be allowed under social distancing guidelines effective immediately. Windows and sun roofs must remain closed if cars are within six feet of one another. "The decision was based on what can be safely opened and operated," Murphy said at Wednesday COVID-19 briefing in Trenton. "We want to be quick…

Authorities: Ex-Con Violating Distancing Rules Jailed For Not Registering As NJ Sex Offender
A Passaic County ex-con with a lengthy criminal record got more than he bargained for when authorities said he went berserk at a Paterson 7-Eleven. Travis Mann, 38, of West Milford was “yelling at employees, alarming customers, shoplifting, and not social distancing or wearing a mask” when city police arrived at the Main Street convenience store, state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said Friday. As they processed him at headquarters for disorderly conduct and violating Gov. Phil Murphy’s emergency social distancing order, police learned that Mann is a registered sex offender wh…

NJ's State-Run Coronavirus Testing Sites Expand To Residents Without Symptoms
New Jersey's two state-run coronavirus testing sites will soon allow residents without symptoms to be tested, state officials said. The sites at Bergen Community College and PNC Bank Art Center in Holmdel Township will provide tests to certain "asymptomatic" state residents, Gov. Phil Murphy said during Friday's COVID-19 briefing. Residents looking to be tested should contact a health-care provider who agrees they should get the test to keep demand lower, Murphy said. "By expanding our testing capability, we can build confidence,'' Murphy said. "We're making huge progress, but we're …

Murphy: 'I'll Be Shocked' If NJ Beaches Aren't Reopened By Memorial Day
New Jersey’s beaches will likely reopen by Memorial Day -- with social distancing restrictions, Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday. Although local governments control beaches and boardwalks, Murphy has the authority as governor to order areas open with such restrictions as 50% parking capacity and 6-foot separations among beachgoers. “I will be shocked if our beaches are not open, but with very specific guidance, just as we opened county and state parks,” Murphy said during a live interview with NJTV. “You should expect we’ll give guidance on beaches before Memorial Day.” The beaches would fa…

Weekend Crowds At Reopened NJ Parks, Beaches 'National Model' For Social Distancing
Even though reopened New Jersey parks and beaches were crowded over the weekend, state authorities reported "overwhelming compliance with social distancing rules." Although there were challenges, there were no notable law enforcement issues, and the re-opening of recreational areas came off pretty smoothly, they said Monday. “After a month of staying at home, it was no surprise that families needed some fun in the sun and quickly filled parks to capacity, creating challenges for law enforcement,” state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said. “What is heartening is the overwhelming deg…

Gateway National Park, Sandy Hook Beach To Reopen This Weekend
UPDATE: One of the most visited national parks in the nation will reopen a week later -- on Saturday, May 9, exactly a week after all of New Jersey's state parks and golf courses. Gateway National Recreation Area, a 27,000-acre federal park that includes Sandy Hook Beach in Monmouth County -- straddling New Jersey and New York -- has been closed since April 8 due to the coronavirus. Swimming and picnicking will remain prohibited, but beaches will reopen, federal officials said. Gov. Phil Murphy announced last Wednesday that all New Jersey parks would reopen at sunrise on May 2, and a…

Murphy: Dog Grooming OK But Not People, Unless 'Romantic Partner' Or Household Member Does It
You can get your dog groomed in New Jersey but not yourself -- unless a household member or "romantic partner" does it -- under a revised set of state social distancing directives, Gov. Phil Murphy and State Police Supt. Patrick Callahan announced Monday. The rules were outlined in "modifications" to Murphy's executive orders restricting certain business operations in the state during the current coronavirus state of emergency. Among the changes, Calahan cited: You can test-drive a car before you buy it, but you have to be alone in the vehicle and it has to be sanitized once you're done if …
