The National Weather Service has shifted its tornado watch across New Jersey and Pennsylvania as Hurricane Debby creeps in. In New Jersey, the tornado watch is in effect through 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 and covers Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties in North Jersey. Motorcyclist, 45, Killed In Route 1 Crash: Police
A 45-year-old motorcyclist from Essex County was killed in a crash on Route 1 in Edison, authorities said. Alexander Chong of Belleville was killed when he struck the rear of a vehicle stopped at a red light, Edison police said. He ended up under the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 northbound near Old Post Road North. An Essex County man drowned in the ocean at a beach along the Jersey Shore, authorities said. Spring Lake police responded to the beachfront near St. Clair Avenue for a swimmer in distress at around 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, the department said in a news release. A solar eclipse on Monday, April 8 is closing schools across New Jersey. Last month, Livingston Public Schools in Essex County announced an early dismissal in anticipation of children looking at the sun. Since then, others have announced they too will close early.
