A 34-year-old Newark woman faces up to a decade in prison after recently being convicted of trying to hide a gun while in a holding cell, authorities said. In July 2020, Talisha Arrington was detained after an incident at a White Castle restaurant on Elizabeth Avenue and placed in a holding cell at the Newark Police headquarters on Clinton Avenue, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. A 22-year-old Jersey City man faces up to 30 years in prison after he was recently convicted of an armed carjacking and robbery that occurred in 2022, authorities said. Man Gets Lengthy Sentence For Christmas Homicide
A 40-year-old Newark man whose case happened in the midst of an overhaul of New Jersey's criminal justice system was sentenced on Monday, July 22, to 68 years in prison for 2016 Christmas morning killing, authorities said. Habeeb Robinson was convicted in June of aggravated manslaughter, weapons possession and witness tampering in the death of Hassan Cobb-Jones, a 32-year-old Newark resident, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. Prosecutor IDs 31-Year-Old Woman Shot Dead In NJ's Largest City
A woman was fatally shot in Newark on Sunday, July 28, authorities said. At 11:23 p.m., Newark police responded to 4th Avenue and North 12th Street where they found Brielle Alston, 31, suffering from a gunshot wound, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage said. A 45-year-old motorcyclist from Essex County was killed in a crash on Route 1 in Edison, authorities said. Alexander Chong of Belleville was killed when he struck the rear of a vehicle stopped at a red light, Edison police said. He ended up under the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 northbound near Old Post Road North. A 36-year-old Jersey City resident and former Essex County correctional officer admitted on Wednesday, July 17, to accepting $14,000 in bribes to smuggle in tobacco and a cell phone to inmates, authorities said. In January 2023, Efrin Wade, who worked at the jail for three years, began communicating with an individual whom he believed was seeking to smuggle in contraband to sell to other inmates, U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger said. A woman who was displaced by a fire months ago is reeling again in New Jersey after a second blaze claimed the life of her own mother and two children over the weekend in Essex County.
