Hurricane Oscar Rapidly Forms In Atlantic With Stronger Winds Than Expected
It's been a busy day in the tropics. Just hours after Nadine was upgraded to a tropical storm early Saturday morning, Oct. 19, a brand-new hurricane burst onto the scene. Oscar, is now near the Bahamas after starting off just north of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, has been moving westward during the week, and escalated quickly on Saturday, before becoming a Category 1 hurricane in the afternoon. Pair Of Tropical Systems Threaten To Become Next Named Storm Of Hurricane Season
Forecasters are monitoring a pair of systems in the tropics that could develop into named storms. One system, called Invest 94L, is now in the Central Atlantic, and expected to pass near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Friday, Oct. 18, and then move toward the Turks and Caicos or the Dominican Republic this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center. New Tropical System In Atlantic Being Watched By Forecasters
Forecasters are monitoring a new system in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It's located a few hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands in West Africa. "This system is forecast to move generally westward to west-southwestward," according to the National Hurricane Center, "and environmental conditions could become more favorable for gradual development by the middle to latter part of this week.
