Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on Pasture Hill Court and found a working garage fire, with an electric vehicle on fire in the roadway, 15 feet from the residence and 10 feet from other vehicles, Raritan Township Fire Company said.
Upon discovering the vehicle was electric, firefighters requested Hunterdon County's Tender Taskforce to respond for water supply as the area had no hydrants, fire officials said.
"If you are not familiar with electric vehicle fires; they are very hard to put out," the Raritan Township Fire Company said. "The chemicals and metals within the batteries react with the water and can create an even hotter and stronger fire. In addition, the car can also reignite after the fire has been put out."
Crews used over 10,000 gallons of water to ensure the fire was out and the battery was cool, firefighters said. After confirmation of no reignition by crews and Hunterdon County HAZMAT, the vehicle was transported via tow truck and will be monitored for signs of reignition, firefighters said.
