A 47-year-old Newark man was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Friday, July 19, for a deadly 2021 crash on the Garden State Parkway where he was driving intoxicated at 114 mph, authorities said.
On Feb. 15, 2021, Rolando Godwin was driving a Range Rover when he struck a Lexus SUV driven by Christopher Meikle, a 46-year-old East Orange resident, causing his car to be engulfed in flames on the Garden State Parkway in Clark, Union County Prosecutor William Daniel said.

East Orange Victim Dies After July 4th Attack, Charges Upgraded For Newark Assailant, Cops Say
A 31-year-old East Orange woman who was stabbed on July Fourth has died from her injuries, leading to upgraded charges against the accused Newark assailant, police said.
At 1:30 a.m., police were called to the 100 block of Park Avenue and found the woman and a child suffering from life-threatening injuries, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. Another child suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Stephens said.
The woman, whose name is being withheld, died on Friday, July 5, Stephens said.

18 Displaced By East Orange Fire, Officials Say
A fire ripped through a three-family home in East Orange on the early morning of Saturday, June 29, displacing 18 people, authorities said.
At 5:23 a.m., firefighters in East Orange responded to the blaze at 135 Greenwood Avenue and were able to bring the fire under control 30 minutes later, a spokeswoman for the city said.
Three families, comprised of 18 people, were able to escape the fire with no injuries, authorities said. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families as the home was deemed inhabitable, authorities said.

A man robbed two women at gunpoint last week in Newark, authorities said.
On Wednesday, June 19 at 3:23 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of Orange Street after a person attempted to snatch a woman's purse, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said.
When the woman resisted, the suspect brandished a firearm and she surrendered her purse, Fragé said. The suspect then fled westbound on Orange Street toward East Orange.
