The 14-year-old and 15-year-old boys were in a Polaris Sportsman 850 heading north on Highlander Drive in West Milford, when they crossed the center line into the opposite lane of travel around 4 p.m., Lt. Eric Darnsteadt said.

The ATV was struck by a 2013 Chevy Malibu, driven by an 18-year-old man, who was unable to avoid the vehicle, police said. Both vehicles left the roadway and the ATV riders were ejected from the ATV.

West Milford officers arriving on the scene initiated first aid measures on both ATV riders, and applied tourniquets. Both ATV riders were flown to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson.

The Malibu driver and his 15-year-old passenger were released.

The crash investigation remains open and anyone having any information regarding this incident are asked to contact West Milford Police Department 973-728-2800.
