A student at Phifer Middle School in Pennsauken brought the gummies from home on Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, Feb. 14 and shared them with other students, Pennsauken Schools Superintendent Ronnie Tarchichi said in a letter to parents.

Staff noticed the students seemed to have erratic behavior and sent them to the nurse, the superintendent said.

The nurse sent four students to the hospital. Three of the students were back at school Friday, while the fourth student involved was suspended, Tarchichi told Daily Voice.

"Educators across the country have seen a significant increase in what children are inhaling and eating now, especially with the opening of new Marijuana/Cannabis dispensaries all over. Many are even opening in close proximities with schools," Tarchichi wrote.

Tarchichi said some municipalities including Pennsauken are "irresponsibly building" dispensaries near public schools.
