The fiery collision happened at 5:50 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, in the area of Route 70 and Airport Road in Lakewood, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Investigators determined that a Cadillac CT5 Blackwing was speeding westbound in the eastbound lanes when it slammed head-on into a Mazda CX5, Billhimer said. The impact caused a chain-reaction crash involving six additional vehicles, officials said.

The Cadillac burst into flames, trapping the driver inside, authorities said. Emergency crews managed to extract the driver, who was then airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) in Neptune before being transferred to Weill Cornell Medicine Burn Center in New York City, where he remains in critical condition, Billhimer stated.

The Mazda driver was also airlifted to JSUMC and is listed in critical condition, Billhimer said. The drivers of the other six vehicles were uninjured, according to officials.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit - Vehicular Homicide Squad, the Lakewood Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the crash, Billhimer said.
