A New Jersey man was jailed without bail after police said they found a loaded, privately made handgun during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 in Putnam County, NY.
Edison, NJ resident Bienvenido R. Nunez Jr., 48, was arrested on Friday, July 10, following a traffic stop on I-84 in Southeast, NY, New York State Police announced on Tuesday, July 14.
The stop happened at around 10 p.m. on Friday, when troopers pulled over a vehicle traveling eastbound for what they said were multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

A Long Island powerlifter bilked more than $100,000 through disability payments while competing in professional competitions, authorities said.
Raymond Phillips, 40, of Huntington Station, pulled off the fraud between 2021 and 2024, the New York Attorney General’s office said.
Phillips said he suffered a serious injury while weightlifting in 2018, rendering him unable to work or perform routine activities without help, investigators said. He applied for state disability payments and was approved in May 2021, according to authorities.

A 58-year-old former Hudson County Superintendent of Weights and Measures stole $250,000 for his own personal gain, authorities announced Tuesday, July 14.
Frank Alonso, a Union City resident, is charged with three counts of official misconduct and multiple theft offenses, Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said.
Between January 2024 and January 2026, Alonso diverted funds intended for the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Office of Weights and Measures, and the New Jersey Weights and Measures Association into accounts he used for personal gain, Mello said.

A 29-year-old Paterson woman was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday, July 10, for supplying drugs that led to a fatal overdose, authorities said.
Shaneshea Cooper had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée Robeson said.
On Thursday, July 24, Joseph Callari died from a drug overdose in Clinton Township after Cooper gave him narcotics, Robeson said.

Parents are the top role models for children ages 4 to 12, according to a survey published Thursday, July 9, by Talker Research and commissioned by Kiddie Academy.
