Newark Police Sergeant Charged In Traffic Officer's Death: Prosecutor Victor Ortiz, a Newark police sergeant, was arrested and charged on Thursday, Jan. 2 in connection with the death of Newark Traffic Control Officer Jairo Rodriguez last month, authorities said. At 12:42 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12,  Rodriguez was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic following an event at the Prudential Center, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said.  Rodriguez was found by police unresponsive and was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after, authorities said. Massive Fire Battles Subzero Temps, Draws Response From 12 Departments In Sussex County Firefighters from across Sussex County joined forces early Monday, Dec. 23, to battle a massive structure fire. The Sussex County Sheriff’s 911 Center began receiving calls about the blaze at the in the Carriage Acres development of Hampton Township, around 7:50 a.m., Hampton Township Fire & Rescue reported. Smoke was visible from all sides of the building when Chief 48-1 arrived on the scene. The chief confirmed the fire to dispatch, triggering a multi-agency response.
