At 3:20 p.m., the crash occurred on Route 10 near Millbrook Avenue in Randolph, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll, Chief of Detectives Robert McNally, Morris County Sheriff James Gannon, and Randolph Police Chief Will Harzula said.
A school minivan, occupied by students and employees, was involved in the crash, authorities said.
The three people initially killed were Bertha Castaneda, a 67-year-old Dover resident, Diane Goetz, a 71-year-old Randolph resident and Maria Figueroa, a 58-year-old Wharton resident, authorities said.
Yexsel Reyes Granados, a 4-year-old Hackettstown resident, who was in the van, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Another child was transported to a hospital and two adults were treated at the scene, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
