A bomb scare brought a major police presence to a church in Bayonne over the weekend, according to the church's pastor.
Rev. Raul Gaviola, the pastor at St. Henry RC Church on W. 29th Street, detailed the incident in a post on Facebook, saying it happened after the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Sept. 21, as he was talking to parishioners.
"I was informed by a police officer that they received a call that there would be an active shooting, and a pipe bomb going off at St. Henry at 7pm," the pastor wrote.

North Jersey Trio Stole $100K+ In Business Checks From Jersey Shore Mailboxes, Police Say
Two men and a woman from North Jersey were accused of stealing more than $100,000 in business checks from Wall Township mailboxes, authorities said.
James Miller, 37, of Passaic; Kaleik Easton, 29, of Bloomfield; and Asia Harrell, 31, also from Bloomfield; were arrested, the Wall Township Police Department said in a news release.
Investigators said businesses were defrauded out of more than $100,000 after checks were taken from their mailboxes. Police executed two search warrants at the suspects' homes and they were taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

A man is at large after he broke into a convenience store in Newark and stole cash and other items on Friday, Sept. 13, authorities said.
At 3 a.m., the suspect broke into Downneck Convenience Store on Pacific Street, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. The suspect was captured on surveillance video smashing the front glass door with a rock, Fragé said.

On Nov. 28, 2022, Eddie Tyree James White, a 26-year-old Delaware resident, approached a USPS mail carrier while she was in her USPS vehicle in Newark, U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger said.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a woman at his Weehawken residence on Tuesday, Sept. 17, authorities said.
At 2 a.m., Weehawken police received a report of a woman who had been physically and sexually assaulted by a man, later identified as Dennis Hackett, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
Hackett was charged with sexual assault, criminal sexual assault and simple assault, Suarez said. Hackett faces additional charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, throwing bodily fluids at a police officer and resisting arrest, police said.

Latonia Bellamy was convicted in 2021 of felony murder for the robbery and fatal shooting of Michael Muchioki, 27, and Nia Haqq, 25 on Randolph Avenue in Jersey City in April 2010, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
