Freak Accident Kills Boy, 12, Playing In NJ Backyard: Police
A New Jersey boy was killed when a tree fell on him in a backyard, authorities said. Lucas Schwartz, 12, was identified as the victim of the Eldridge Avenue incident in Lawrence Township on a GoFundMe page. Police said he'd been playing with a friend in the backyard of a home when gusty winds blew the tree over, and it fell onto him around 12:09 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14. Train Operator Dead, 23 Passengers Hurt In NJ Transit Crash With Tree
A train operator was killed and multiple others hurt after a tree fell on an NJ Transit train Monday morning, Oct. 14 in Burlington County. The incident happened around 6 a.m. on the River LINE train, which had been heading north from Trenton when it struck a tree south of the Roebling Station in Mansfield Township, an NJ Transit spokesperson said. Crash Shuts All Lanes Of Route 80 In Paterson
A crash closed all lanes of Route 80 in Paterson Sunday night, Sept. 29. Three vehicles were heading east when they were involved in a chain-reaction crash, each one rear-ending the next as traffic began to slow down at milepost 58.4 around 8:10 p.m., New Jersey State Police Sgt. Charles Marchan said. No injuries were reported and the highway has since reopened.

Car Crashes Into Building In Summit: Authorities
A car crashed into a townhouse in Summit on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 25, authorities said. Firefighters and police responded to the scene at Norwood Avenue at 9:43 a.m., a spokesperson for the City of Summit said in a release. Would-Be Jumper Hospitalized After Closing Lanes Of George Washington Bridge (

A would-be George Washington Bridge jumper was hospitalized Tuesday night, Sept. 24, after bringing traffic along the bridge to a halt, authorities said. A spokesperson for the Port Authority Police Department confirmed the investigation but not have any further information as of 7:40 p.m. Wednesday morning, a spokesperson said that the incident was reported at 5:42 p.m. near the 179th Street ramp in the westbound lanes. All lanes along the ramp were closed. The man was removed and taken to a local hospital, the PAPD said. Traffic resumed at 7:24 p.m.

Teen Football Player Airlifted After Losing Feeling In Legs In Sussex County, Police Say
A 13-year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital after he was injured playing football on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 21, in Sussex County authorities said. At 8:11 p.m., the boy was playing football at Station Park in Sparta Township when he temporarily lost feeling in his legs, Sparta Township Police Captain Thomas Snyder said. An Atlantic Air helicopter transported the boy to Morristown Medical Center, Snyder said. The young athlete regained feeling in both legs before the helicopter arrived, but was still hospitalized for for further evaluation, Snyder said.

An 11-year-old boy impaled by a stick in Wayne was rescued by his school's resource officer and firefighters using a stokes basket on Monday afternoon, Sept. 16, police said. Newly-released body-worn camera footage shows two New Jersey police officers saving a choking baby. Hightstown Officers Daniel Abbatemarco and Kenneth Larsen responded to a call of a choking baby girl on March 31. Upon arrival, they were met by a man holding the girl. Teen Airlifted In UTV Accident On Sussex County Farm: Police
An 18-year-old male was airlifted to the hospital following a crash on a Sussex County farm on Monday, Aug. 26, local police said. The male was riding on the back of the UTV, a larger type of ATV, which was being used to perform work on a farm on Layton Lane in Sparta, Sparta Police Capt. Tom Snyder said. The UTV made an unexpected turn and the victim lost his balance, falling off and hitting his head, Snyder said. He lost consciousness and was flown to the hospital. "The operator of the UTV was fully cooperative with patrol units and showed no signs of intoxication," Snyder said.
