At 12:11 a.m., a Freightliner tractor trailer, driven by Jose Diaz, was going southbound on the Turnpike on the outer roadway, Jeffrey Lebron, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said.
Another Freightliner tractor trailer was parked on the southbound side of the outer roadway on the right shoulder, with two people inside, Lebron said.
Diaz's Freightliner entered the right shoulder and impacted the rear of the parked Freightliner, Lebron said.
Diaz sustained fatal injures and one person inside the parked Freightliner sustained minor injuries, Lebron said.
The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
