Austin Gilchrist was unresponsive and slumped over the steering wheel of a Ford Escape with its engine running, when Lyndhurst police were called to DeJessa Bridge just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, Detective Lt. Vincent Auteri said. When attempts to wake Gilchrist failed, officers forced entry into the vehicle. At 9:31 a.m., Fairfield police said they were alerted to a stolen vehicle in the township, a 2016 gray Hyundai Elantra with Pennsylvania registration, that had been stolen Friday, Nov. 1 out of Northampton County in Pennsylvania.  The vehicle was located traveling west on Route 46 and was stopped on Fairfield Road, police said.
