Union Police responded to Spruce Street at approximately 3:19 p.m. for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian, the department said.
Investigators determined that a 62-year-old Union man was backing up a 2004 black Chevrolet Suburban when he hit a pedestrian walking west on Spruce Street, police said. The victim was transported to University Hospital, where she later died, authorities said.
Union Police shut down Spruce Street for about four hours while the crash scene was processed, officials said.
The investigation is being led by Officer William Piliego of the Union Police Department. Authorities urge any witnesses to contact the Union Police Traffic Bureau at (908) 851-5070.
