Long-Serving Firefighter, Teacher From Northern Westchester Dies A firefighter and teacher from Northern Westchester who served his department for more than 50 years has died.  Somers resident Fred Whipple, who served the Somers Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, died on Sunday, March 19, the department announced.  Since joining the department in 1965, Whipple became known by many for his great personality and he eventually became the "true senior man" at the firehouse, lending his knowledge and experience to many younger members, according to the fire department. ID Released For Victim Of Fatal House Fire In Area A grandfather who died after saving his two young grandchildren from a raging house fire has been identified by police. Putnam County resident Jintu Zheng, age 65, of Lake Carmel, was found inside the burning home on Scarsdale Road around 10 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, said the Kent Police. On arrival at the home, Brewster firefighters and Kent police went into the house to look for Zheng as flames engulfed the home, police said. Zheng was found by a back window. Woman Saved From Jumping Off New Tappan Zee Bridge By Good Samaritan A woman who pulled her vehicle onto the shoulder of the roadway of the new Tappan Zee Bridge and began climbing the safety fence to jump from the span was saved by a Good Samaritan. The incident began around 12:50 p.m., Sunday, March 14, in the Tarrytown area of the bridge, said Trooper Tara McCormick. A Dutchess County 911 alert was issued warning officers in the Town of Fishkill that a child was choking and not breathing on Saturday, Jan. 4.
