Here's When Plastic Utensils, Condiments Law Will Go Into Effect In Westchester
If you order takeout in Westchester, you'll have to ask for plastic utensils and condiments in order to receive them, according to a new law that will soon go into effect. The new law, which will go into effect on Saturday, Sept. 2, will ban food establishments in Westchester from providing plastic food ware or condiment packets to both dine-in and takeout customers unless they are specifically asked for, according to county officials. A 10-term Connecticut State Representative and journalist Richard "Dick" Roy has died. Roy, of Milford, died Sunday, June 2. He was 76. Roy was elected the State Representative from the 119th district in Hartford. He went on to serve with distinction for 10 terms. He secured the passage of the state's first distracted driving bill as well as mandatory labeling of GMO products and the banning of pesticides on school property. A popular Long Island vacation destination is getting a little less festive with the passing of a rare balloon ban. The East Hampton Town Board announced that it has unanimously voted in favor of legislation that will ban the intentional release of balloons in the area. Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc, who sponsored the legislation, said that the idea behind the new law was to cut down on litter and to protect wildlife that ingests popped balloons. “Balloons waste natural resources, litter our communities, pollute our waterways and kill wildlife,” the new law states. Westchester City May Become State's First To Charge For Paper, Plastic Bags
Retailers may be going greener in an effort to eliminate the option of single-use carryout bags at stores in Yonkers. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and members of the Yonkers Green City Advisory Committee announced their plan to submit legislation to the City Council regarding the use of single-use paper and plastic bags in the city. Under the proposed Environmental Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, retail stores would charge a five cent fee on all single-use carryout plastic and paper bags.
