Drones Used To Rescue Stranded Hikers Near Breakneck Ridge The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office turned to technology to help rescue two hikers who found themselves in a precarious position near Breakneck Ridge in Philipstown. Two hikers called the Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, June 9, after becoming stranded on a steep precipice approximately a half mile south from Breakneck Ridge, Sheriff Robert Langley Jr. said.  The Cold Spring Fire Department and New York State Park Police located the hikers at approximately 5 p.m., but were unable to rescue them due to the terrain. Rockslide Causes Closure Of Popular Breakneck Ridge Trail A rockslide has closed the popular Breakneck Ridge trail to ensure hiking enthusiasts aren't injured. The trail in Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve is temporarily closed as a precaution due to a recent rockfall, said Dan Keefe, spokesman for New York State Parks. "We are currently conducting an engineering assessment to determine steps necessary to ensure the safety of the trail," Keefe said. "It is premature to say when it may reopen." Stuck Breakneck Ridge Teen Hiker Issued A Ticket Following Rescue A 19-year-old who had to be rescued after becoming struck high on a trail on Breakneck Ridge, a mountain along the Hudson River between Beacon and Cold Spring, was issued a ticket after he was back to safety. According to State Park Police, the department received word around 5:30 p.m. Thursday that the teen from Ozone Park, was hiking on the White Trail when he ventured off-trail in an attempt to get the Yellow Trail, said Randy Simons, spokesman for the New York State Park Police. Hiker, 25, Dies After Fall From Mountain In Hudson Valley A 25-year-old hiker from the Hudson Valley fell 100 feet to his death while free climbing with two friends on Thursday, officials said. Kenneth Steier of Poughkeepsie had been hiking Thursday along the Washburn Trail at Hudson Highland State Park, about a mile south of Breakneck Ridge, said Randy Simons, a spokesman for the state Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
