Yorktown's Mastro, Kaishian Win Super 16 Titles

Yorktown was making its first appearance in the annual Super 16 Wrestling Championships Saturday under coach John Tornambe and the Cornhuskers came away with positive results.

Joe Mastro (145 pounds) and Jimmy Kaishian (120) won their respective weight classes as Yorktown finished fourth at Carmel High School.

Fox Lane, with a tournament-best five champions, won the team title followed by Center Moriches (L.I.), Valley Central and Yorktown.

Along with Mastro and Kaishian, Steven Sabella (170), Thomas Murray (182) and David Varian (285) all finished second, and Kyle Santucci (132) placed fourth.

Mastro, the second seed, registered a 7-1 decision over top-seeded Giancarlo Morreale of Fox Lane, and Kaishian, also seeded second, defeated Crotons D.J. Frederich, 7-2.

Joe is continuing to dominate, scoring a lot of points and wrestling really well, said Tornambe, a veteran of Super 16 from his wrestling and coaching days at Ossining. Jimmy is wrestling extremely physical and is beginning to wrestle really well at the right time.
