The Storm defeated the 9UB White Plains Hit-N-Run, to win the championship 7-6 in the Sunday game at Yorktown's Legacy Field.
"This game was a great ending to a magical undefeated season," Storm Coach Lou Vernagallo said. "We only put this team together five months ago, with only four of these boys ever playing organized ball before."
The team finished with a 16-0 record.
Vernagallo continued,
We practiced and played as much as we could to get to this point. To see how far these boys have come is unbelievable and a testament to their commitment and hard work. I don't think any of these boys will forget this championship for a very long time.
The team of boys 9 and younger includes Thomas Imperati, A.J. Imperati, Anthony D'errico, Vincent Lugo, Nicholas Santobello, Nicholas Clarke, Max Selinger, Michael Zumatto, Louie Vernagallo, Alex Mautone, Raymond Ameneiros, Joseph LaPeruta, Nicholas Muratore and Michael Lucia.
Vernagallo, Anthony LaPeruta, Joe Lucia and Paul D'errico coached the team.
In the Sunday game, White Plains took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Shrub Oak players answered back with five runs of their own.
After two more White Plains runs in the top of the second made it 5-4, Storm pitchers shut down the White Plains squad over the next three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Shrub Oak scored two more runs. White Plains rallied in the top of the sixth, to close the Shrub Oak lead to 7-6.
With runners on second and third, Storm Pitcher A.J. Imperati struck out the final batter, giving the Storm the championship and a perfect season.
"It was an honor to coach them and see them celebrate on this field today," Vernagallo added. "I want to thank the GHVBL and Shrub Oak for allowing us to field this team and thank all my players, coaches and parents for their amazing support all season long."
