Lakeland Field Hockey Makes State Final Four

MILTON, N.Y. -- Abby Murdock got Lakeland started early Saturday, and once she did, she did not stop.The junior registered her first varsity hat trick as the Hornets overwhelmed Section 9 titlist Rondout Valley, 5-0 in a New York State Field Hockey Championship Class B regional final at the Milton Sports Dome.Lakeland (19-1), the two-time defending Class B state champions, returns to its third consecutive final four and sixth overall this millennium. The Hornets will play Camden (Section 3) in a semifinal, next Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The other semi will be Garden City (Section 11)-Maine-Endwell (Section 4), at 3:30. The semi-final winners meet for the title Sunday, at noon.Murdock initiated a four-goal first half at the 2:31 mark, assisted by Shannon Scavelli. Emma Bozek doubled the lead at 4:37, followed 21 seconds later by Murdock’s second of the game, again assisted by Scavelli. Murdock closed the scoring and completed her hat trick at 6:35. Bozek added her second of the game in the second half.“Right before we scored, Rondout Valley had the ball in our end for the first two and a half minutes,” Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen said. “Once we scored the first goal, we realized that we were going to be okay and we could run our offense.”
