McGovern graduated from Lakeland in 2005. He is the only Lakeland soccer player ever to go on after high school to play four years in a Division I program.
While at Lakeland, he served as indoor and outdoor track and field team captain in 2004 and 2005. He earned recognition as All League in winter and spring both those years, and as All County in winter and spring 2004 and spring 2005.
The Rebels won their first league titles in the history of the program in winter and spring track during McGovern’s senior year. He was part of four school-record setting relay teams.
In soccer, McGovern was also a team captain, earned All-State honors and was a Con-Edison Scholastic Sports Award winner. The team won sectionals twice during his time at Lakeland.
He was named “Player of the Year” by North County News, deemed All-Section and League MVP his senior year. He led the section in scoring, with 17 goals and 21 assists. He also made All-League and All-Section his junior year.
McGovern also achieved academic success. He was on the High Honor Roll all through high school, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Binghamton University, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree.
