Putnam Boces Offering Free Literacy, Career, Educational Training

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES is providing free training to in-school and out-of-school youth and young adults who do not have high school diplomas and face barriers to educational and career opportunities.

Under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, free educational, literacy and career training is available to low-income youths between the ages of 14 and 21 as well as to young adults ages 16 to 24.

To qualify, applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria: being an offender, homeless, pregnant or parenting, an English language Learner, lacking basic educational skills and/or requiring assistance to complete an educational program or secure and hold a job.

The program’s goal will be to provide and prepare participants without high school diplomas with the following:

  • Educational training (Literacy, TASC, CDOS)
  • Career training in programs such as hospitality, health care, construction trades, and business computer technology
  • Paid work/internship experience
  • Stipends for participation
  •  Job readiness skills and career exploration

Information sessions are taking place at the Field Library at 4 Nelson Avenue, Peekskill on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and Thursday, Dec. 10 from 1 - 3 p.m., and at Carmel’s Laura Spain Memorial Cornerstone Park Building on Monday Dec. 14 and the following Monday, Dec. 21 from noon - 3 p.m.
