Lakeland Students Learn to Give to the Community

YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- For 25 years an english teacher in the Lakeland School District has taught her students what it means to give back to their community.Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School teacher Janet Schwarz led students in their annual food drive, and came through with an outstanding donation. In the drive held all of last week, students brought in donations to b given to the food pantry at Yorktown Community Help.  The middle school students brought in 4,663 cans, boxes, and bags of food during the week long drive.  The sixth grade topped all classes with 2,795 items collected. In the class competition, first place was Mark Henkels 7th grade class, 2nd place Mary Eickler's 6th grade class, and 3rd place Carol Verrino's 6th grade class.Schwarz said she started the drive to do something for the less fortunate in town.

"The students have learned there are people in the community who are less fortunate," Schwarz said. "With this economy, kids realize there are people who are perhaps experiencing difficult times."
