YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Erin Maurno's aunt and grandmother both faced and survived breast cancer. Now, the Lakeland High School senior understands the toll cancer can have on the affected individual as well as their family.
For her Girl Scout gold award project, Maurno decided to take what she had learned as a niece and a granddaughter and apply it to something bigger, which is why she assembled bags for families with a loved one fighting cancer.
"I knew that I wanted to base my gold award project around families who are affected by cancer," Maurno said. "I knew how tough cancer can be on families so I wanted to help."
Maurno had put her project into motion by contacting Amy Sayegh, the founder of Putnam's Community Cares. Sayegh was in attendance Thursday night when Maurno was saluted as part of the district's Lakeland Salutes portion of the town board meeting.
Maurno raised money and held workshops to educate other Girl Scouts on women's health, and held a movie night to raise money for her own Girl Scout project
"One is for younger kids, elementary school, and the other is for older kids who are in high school or middle school," Maurno said. "It makes it easier for sick parents to have fun and interact with their families."
