Fox Meadow, Pines Bridge Students Forge Friendships

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Members of the student council at Fox Meadow High School were looking forward to meeting other students from Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES when they visited Pines Bridge School recently. They just didn't expect the relationships that would come out of it.

“The visit really made them think,” Fox Meadow guidance counselor Jason Tobacco said of the eight student council members who went to Pines Bridge. “They saw the challenges these students had and how well they’re doing with them. They can’t wait to go back again.”

Students at the Pines Bridge School face multiple disabilities, but that doesn't stop them from having fun, the Fox Meadow students learned. While the Fox Meadow students helped the Pines Bridge students decorate cookies, sing songs and read stories, the main focus of the day was getting to know each other.

“It was great seeing them smile,” said Brandon McCabe, a Fox Meadow junior who is a carpentry student at the Tech Center. “They were really happy to have us there, and it made me feel good about myself."

Tobacco so the main question students wanted answered after their visit was when their next visit would be.

“They’ve been brainstorming about how they could possibly become involved in a field day of some sort,” he said.

For McCabe, the visit may just have changed the direction of his future.

“It really made me think that working with students like this might be something I’d like to do in the future,” he said.
