YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Assemblyman Steve Katz (R, C-Yorktown) has issued a statement on the current education curriculum and policies.

“The numbers released yesterday by the State Education Department show that the people of New York have had enough of their children being forced into high-stakes testing on a curriculum they don’t believe is working. Education is more than the few hours students spend in a high-pressure situation. This state has forgotten that. When 20 percent of the eligible students do not take a standardized test, it is time to reevaluate education policies and curriculum."

“My colleagues and I in the Assembly Minority Conference held numerous open education forums to discuss the Common Core curriculum and high-stakes testing model in 2013. We have been aware of the issues with Common Core and have been fighting to halt its implementation through the APPLE Plan (A.3656)."

"Unfortunately, the Assembly Majority has blocked this legislation in the Education Committee despite some of their members being sponsors of the bill. This year, when legislation had been put forward to protect the teachers, students, parents, and schools with children opting out of the tests, I immediately co-sponsored it. That legislation is the Common Core Parental Refusal Act (A.6025). That has not been brought forward for a vote."

“We have the momentum, and people are taking notice of the opt-out movement. Let us not give up a fight we are obviously winning. By putting continued pressure on those who are standing in the way of reforming the status quo, we can make great change; and support like this on the grassroots level is how we can end the Common Core high-stakes testing model once and for all.”
