WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Yorktown Police pulled off a noteworthy piece of police work last week when they were able to reunite an elderly missing New Jersey woman with her family after finding her driving in Yorktown.

The event occurred around 1:30 a.m., when Sgt. Timothy Kolkmann and his crew were patrolling the town during the midnight shift when officer Daniel Curtis spotted a Jeep Liberty with New Jersey plates heading northbound in the southbound lane on Gomer Street, police said.

Thinking he had a drunk driver on his hands, Curtis was ready to start an investigation, but when he approached the car he found an elderly woman who did not smell of alcohol and was not slurring her words or disheveled in any way.

After a few routine questions, Curtis found that the woman had "lost her way" and did not know where she was and she told him that she had never heard of Yorktown.

Luckily, the woman had her drivers license and a quick check showed that she was a resident of Newark.

At this point,  the sergeant thought it was best to take the woman to police headquarters so they could find out if she was reported missing or find a way to get her home.

Once at the station, midnight desk officer Paul Grieve, struck up a friendly conversation with the woman and found that she had not eaten for quite some time. An order with the Yorktown Diner was quickly placed.

While the woman was eating, Curtis contacted the Newark Police Department and learned the woman had been reported missing.

The Newark police were able to tell the family they had found the missing woman and they drove to Yorktown to take her home. During the wait, officers said the woman "charmed them" with nice stories.

When her family arrived, they were very grateful.

Luckily for them, Curtis happened to be in the right place at the right time and all ended well.
