Yorktown Police: Drunk Driver Crashes Car, Flees Scene on Foot

YORKTOWN, N.Y.—A drunk driver from Yorktown crashed his car and then tried to leave the scene of the accident on foot, police said.

Yorktown Police report that on Feb. 25 they responded to a two-vehicle auto accident at the intersection of Crompond Road and the Taconic Parkway. After being dispatched to the scene, police stopped the alleged operator of one of the vehicles involved in the accident who allegedly was trying to flee the scene on foot, police said.

An investigation revealed the man attempting to flee was 44-year-old Gregory Bennett, who had been operating his 2008 Audi west on Crompond Road when his car crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2000 Chevrolet, police said. The driver traveling east was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital with a back injury, police said.

Police said Bennett was operating his vehicle while intoxicated. Bennett was taken by Mohegan Lake ambulance to Hudson Valley Hospital for chest pain and arrested at the hospital for the incident, police said.

After his release from the hospital, he was brought to the Yorktown Police Department and charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a personal injury auto accident, both misdemeanors, as well as failure to keep right and refusing to submit to a blood alcohol test. Bennett was released to a family member and is scheduled to appear March 27 in Yorktown Court.
