YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- Yorktown veteran Tom Brady said every year Veteran's day is special, but this year, it was even more so.
On the eleventh hour, in the eleventh month on the eleventh day of 1918 an official ceasefire was signed between the countries fighting in World War I. Friday on the eleventh hour in the eleventh month on the eleventh day in 2011, Yorktown came together to honor veterans of that war, and of all others.
"It's always a special day, it's a day to remember and honor all of our veterans who have served," Brady said. "But this year, this is the year of eleven, and that makes it even more special."
Brady, a member of Yorktown's American Legion Post 1009 was joined by his fellow veterans and members of the post, as well as member Patrick McDonough.
"This is the first year I came to it, and I really made a point of doing so because we lost our final World War I veteran, which is what Veteran's day started as," McDonough said. "The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month was the end of World War I, but, there are no more living World War I veterans. Today, we need to remember that and honor all of our veterans."
Supervisor Susan Siegel who spoke at the ceremony, thanked all of the veterans in attendance, as well as John McQuillana Yorktown resident who was honored by State Sen. Greg Ball Thursday evening and was inducted into the first veterans hall of fame, not just for his past service to his country but also for his service to the town of Yorktown.
Today is a day to honor our veterans, and to thank everyone who has ever done anything to serve the country, Brady said.
