YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Yorktown residents who took the time to examine their property tax bill recently may have noticed a hefty 19 percent increase in the refuse district tax.
The town's six-year contract with C.R.P. Sanitation expired on December 31, 2011 and the town had to go out to bid using a new state-imposed prevailing wage law, which resulted in Yorktown paying $1 million more this year for garbage pickup.
"It's another unfunded state mandate. We had no choice," said Council member Nick Bianco.
C.R.P. was the lowest bidder, but Yorktown decided to only agree to a one-year contract.
Looking ahead, Bianco said the town should study the cost of providing its own sanitation service. He noted Yorktown reached out to neighboring Cortlandt, which provides its residents with garbage pickup, about possibly sharing services, but "they didn't want to hear nothing," he said.
