YORKTOWN, N.Y.For the second day in a row, an American Red Cross van was stationed outside Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School, which was being used as a shelter.
According to Larry Krantz, who is the logistics leader for the Metro North New York section of the Red Cross, there were about 75 people in the shelter Monday afternoon.
Krantz said the school, which is part of the Lakeland School District, was working with the Red Cross to provide hot meals for anyone who came to the shelter.
The thing is, were unsure of how much longer were going to be here, Krantz said. We know well most likely have a shelter tomorrow, and for the rest of today but where well be all depends on if the schools open or not.
Krantz said those who were visiting the shelter were mostly just cold, wanting a hot meal or to charge their electronics.
But so far, everything is going smoothly, he said. The school has just been terrific in working with us to make meals and everything.
Elderly residents from Country Home were evacuated yesterday, which Krantz said made up a majority of the population who had spent the night. He estimated about 15 to 17 volunteers were working in the shelter at a given shift.
