Has Yorktown Been Left Vulnerable?
We have seen the catastrophic flooding from hurricane "Harvey" which has caused nightmarish reality for millions of Texas residents. But what about the damage that may be caused by subsequent hurricanes like "Irma" or the next Nor'easter that targets Westchester County? One has to wonder about where will all of Yorktown drenching rain go? Town-wide rezoning has allowed developments to be built on hillsides/hilltops and large scale commercial and residential properties are being developed in previously designated wetland areas with little thought as to their consequences to the public. Have political decisions to change Yorktown's Wetland Regulations already negatively impacted our community's ability to withstand severe flooding? If the current pace of construction continues in Yorktown's wetlands they may no longer offer adequate protection from a major storm in the foreseeable future. Rain runoff will have nowhere else to go but into your homes, basements, businesses and roadways. While others may be handsomely profiting from the investments of building in wetlands the average Yorktown resident will be left to pick up the soaked pieces of their lives and pay the cost and bare the heart ache of rebuilding. Have short sighted elected officials as well as their political appointees made Yorktown more vulnerable to future storm damage? Will these politicians accept responsibility for their decisions to weaken wetland protections or merely blame the flooding on an act of God?
