Guiding Eyes For The Blind Honors First 'Dog of the Year'

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Dick Pomo may occasionally joke about being an average golfer when he hits the greens, but there’s one thing the blind Arizonan does not joke about – the special bond he has with his guide dog Tanya.

Yorktown's Guiding Eyes for the Blind honored its first "Dog of the Year" at its annual Golf Classic.

The 9-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever and graduate of Guiding Eyes for the Blind, partnered with the Green Valley resident since 2007, allows him, he says, to “travel independently and share the kind of love that only those who love animals can understand.”

“Every night before turning in, I drop to my knees and give her a hug and kiss and thank God and Guiding Eyes for the joy I experience each day,” says Pomo, who retired as executive director of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind in 2005.

Now Tanya has become the first Guiding Eyes graduate to receive the honor of “Dog of the Year.” The award was made at the Yorktown organization’s Blind Annual Golf Classic, which took place June 8 at the Mount Kisco (N.Y.) Country Club and the Fairview Country Club in Greenwich, Conn.

Tanya was given a trophy and a basket of toys and doggie treats by Jennifer Hill, president and CEO of Canine Company, the Wilton, Conn., firm that sponsored the award.

“Guiding Eyes dogs provide safety, freedom and a quality of life for their handlers that needs to be celebrated,” Hill said at the presentation. “That is why we are such an active supporter of Guiding Eyes for the Blind and wanted to sponsor this special new award.”

Guiding Eyes is located at 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown, N.Y. For more information about the organization, go to www.guidingeyes.org. For more information about Canine Company, go to www.caninecompany.com.
