YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- The popular Yorktown bar and restaurant Murphys was opened by town councilman Terrence Murphy after his father passed from pancreatic cancer, and in September his restaurant will hold an event to raise awareness, and funds for pancreatic cancer research.
The fundraiser, to be held on September 25, will be for the Lustgarten Foundation, in honor of Jack Murphy and Rob Olmsted, both Yorktown residents who passed away from the disease.
Murphy said he had met with Norma, Robs mother and when they were in contact he knew she wanted to have a fundraiser but didnt know it was for the same disease that his father had died from. The two met, and he said it was a no-brainer to hold the event there.
Between phone calls back and forth with Norma, I didnt even realize what the fundraiser was even for, Murphy said. I ended up getting in contact with her, and when we met she was telling me what happened with her son. By the time my father was diagnosed he passed way 11 weeks laterso we kept talking and I said well why dont we do this fundraiser, and lets do it right here at the restaurant.
Ed Lachterman, who knows both the Murphy and the Olmsted families is helping to put on the event. Lachterman, a Yorktown resident commended the Lustgarten Foundation for their efforts to find a cure for pancreatic cancer. The foundation is run by Cablevision, in honor of Marc Lustgarten, Cablevisions vice chairman.
The wonderful thing about cablevision is they run the fundraiser out of their own operational budget, giving the opportunity for 100% of whatever money raised goes to researching and finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.
Lachterman said there will be both entertainment, good food and beverages, as well as raffles. Musical entertainment will be by Class Action and DeFran and comedian John Iavarone will entertain the attendees as well.
We started thinking about the different things we could do, and now its going to be a beer, wine and international food tasting, he said. Norma and Terrence were both familiar with each other, and they both lost family members to the disease, so they were each looking for a way to do something to remember them and put something together, and I kind of ended up being the glue that brought them together to do it.
There is a $55 entrance fee to attend the event which includes the entertainment and all of the different drinks and food. Lachterman said there were also be other fundraisers including different raffles and auctions.
Murphy said the goal of the event is to bring awareness, and the organization the fundraiser goes to is ideal.
Its just a matter of bringing more acute awareness to pancreatic cancer, and the Lustgarten foundation is great since they donate 100 percent of the proceeds back to research, it was one of those thingsit was a no brainer. So were all on board and were going to do it.
