Yorktown Board Discusses Possible Speed Change on Underhill Avenue

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Yorktown officials discussed the possibility of increasing the speed limit on a main road in Yorktown Tuesday night.

A local law would be needed to change the speed limit proposed on Underhill Avenue from the Taconic State Parkway to Route 118 from 30 mph to 40 mph. The speed limit was once 40 mph but it was lowered to 30 mph roughly 20 years ago when the town took control of the road from the county.

The work session, the first of 2012 for new Supervisor Michael Grace, only presented the possibility of changing the limit. Advertisements for a local law, and then a public hearing would need to occur before the town board could make an decisions.

The board was armed with information from the Yorktown Police Department, showing that the average speed on the road was 48 mph when the segment of the road was tested in 2008. During the time in which the road was surveyed in November to December 2008, 17,685 cars traveled on the road per day, the board said.
