Governor Cuomo's announcement Tuesday that the MTA tax would be reduced in his proposed tax plan has State Sen. Greg Ball declaring victory
Ball, who has made calls for the repeal of the MTA payroll tax, as well as a forensic audit of the MTA said the reduction is a good first step.
"This tax cut for the middle class is exactly the shot in the arm working families need and is a great jobs focused package that begins to adjust our unfair tax code, while eliminating the job killing MTA payroll tax for the vast majority of payers," Ball (R, C-Patterson) said in a statement Wednesday. "Now more than ever we must remain focused on job creation and push even harder moving into 2012 to alleviate the tax burden for working families, seniors and small business owners."
In a statement on the overall plan to grow the economy, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said he was pleased with the bi-partisan plan, which included the elimination or reduction of the MTA tax.
"I am pleased that this proposed agreement realizes long-held Senate Republican priorities like cutting the corporate franchise tax for manufacturers, reducing the job-killing MTA payroll tax for small businesses, eliminating New York's stealth tax by indexing tax brackets and deductions, and building our reserves, along with providing additional flood relief to support job growth in devastated communities," Skelos said.
Ball said he was "thrilled" with the Governor's plan which eliminates or reduces the payroll tax for 294,000 taxpayers. In the Governor's plan, the state would compensate the MTA for the $250 million in lost revenue. The tax would also be eliminated from an additional 415,000 taxpayers by raising the self-employment income exemption. Private elementary and secondary schools and parochial schools would also be exempt from the tax.
