Updated at 2:45 p.m. YORKTOWN, N.Y. – A community was in mourning Friday following the loss Randy Zapakin, who died tragically Thursday night after being struck by a car in his neighborhood on Farm Walk Road.

Those who knew Zapakin remembered him as a generous volunteer, successful Realtor and good friend.

“Tragic, unbelievable, a loss beyond measure,” wrote David Denu on The Yorktown Daily Voice’s Facebook page. “There are no words that can make any sense of this."

Zapakin, 57, was reportedly out walking his dog at 8:15 p.m. when he was hit by a blue 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by an 18-year-old Yorktown resident, police said. Zapakin was pronounced dead at the scene by Yorktown paramedics.

Lt. Robert Noble told The Yorktown Daily Voice that it is far too early to determine if any charges will be filed against the driver and the investigation is still ongoing. The department would not release any more information about the accident.

Zapakin was a sales associate at Keller Williams Realty Partners, and earned a bachelor of arts degree from SUNY New Paltz. He worked closely with Relay for Life and handled emceeing duties for the group’s annual walk at Jack DeVito Field.

Jon Lopez, a 24-year-old neighbor on Farm Walk Road, said Zapakin took him to his first New York Yankees game. Lopez described Zapakin as “a really good guy with a great personality."

"It's a shame," he said. "Tragedy to say the least.”

Zapakin is survived by his wife, Debbie, sons Jared and Jordan, and daughter Allie.

The funeral service for Zapakin is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Congregation Sons of Israel, 1666 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.
