Yorktown Officer Brings Community Beat to School

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Police officer Brian Mundy has a unique beat. He walks the halls of Yorktown’s Strang Middle School each day.  “We are here as a liaison,” Mundy said. “We are here as educators.” He emphasized that law enforcement is only part of his daily activity with the 1,000 or so students, and not the first part.

Mundy works with counselors at the school to help with the bullying program. He also goes into different classes to provide educational programming. Mundy said he has handled lessons on everything from Spanish words during a police officer stop to measuring skid marks after an accident for math.

He said he teaches a great deal about how to stay safe on the Internet and with social networks. “I think the kids get it,” he said. “This year, there are a lot less incidents than there have been in the past. The education is definitely working.”

Mundy likes the consistency that comes with the program. “This is my fourth school year,” he said. “The first eighth graders I had are now juniors in high school. I get to see them with the same campus.”

Mundy said he enjoys working with the students in the Yorktown community. “This district has some amazing students,” he said. “A lot of parents should be real proud of their kids.”

Mundy said at the middle school level he has time with students in and out of the classroom. He tries to build on the education that is started at the elementary level in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program.

Mundy began as a police officer in New York City in 2005 after a career in the sports field. He continues to do some broadcasting for Pace basketball. In 2006, he transferred to the Yorktown Police Department.

He said he enjoys the school setting. “The students feel comfortable coming to me with information,” he said. “If you see something, say something.”
