Yorktown Nursery Continues to Bloom

Like the thousands of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials that flower Blossom Nurseries, the nursery itself is set to bloom.

The current four-acre property is looking to expand and use their 11-acre potential, and manager Brady Cullen is looking to add more items to make the nursery unique.

“We might not have a lot of any one thing, but we want to have a lot of everything,” Cullen said. “We want to become a one-stop place for everything you need.”

The nursery itself does have plenty of what’s in demand.  Cullen said a few popular items have been their knock-out roses, organic fertilizers and ornamental grasses.

“A lot of people have also started their own vegetable gardens, or are starting to plant their own herbs that they can freeze and use year-round,” he said.

If your planning to start your own garden, Cullen advised the soil is most important.

“The soil is going to be the key and holds all the organic matter and vitamins you will need,” he said. He also advised when you leave the nursery with your plants, you must loosen the roots around the plant before putting it in the ground, and don’t bury it any deeper than the height of the container. Without these two steps you can suffocate or strangle your plant.

Cullen, a Cornell University graduate in horticulture and landscape design, also urges anyone with questions to show up or call the nursery—they even have a service for gardeners to send in pictures of their garden so Cullen can help design it. You can stop by Blossom Nurseries for nearly anything—vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, shrubs, mulch, vine plants and of course, annuals and perennial plants. With 10 greenhouses full, the options are growing.
