Yorktown Ambulance Corps Sees Record Calls in 2011

YORKTOWN, N.Y.—The Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps (YVAC) answered its highest number of calls to date in 2011, according to Captain Richard Cariello.

Cariello explained that the ambulance corps, made up entirely of volunteers, answered 1326 calls during 2011, but they weren’t due to any big events caused by the weather.

“We really weren’t that affected by the storm in the sense that we didn’t have more than normal number of calls,” Cariello said. Both Tropical Storm Irene and the October snowstorm had little effect on the increased number of calls, although Cariello does have a hypothesis of what was behind the increase.

“Our town is growing, and our population’s age is growing so that’s more of what the increase had to do with,” he said. “These numbers have been increasing over the years, they didn’t just jump up over the storms." 

For that reason, and the number of increasing calls, more volunteers are always a necessity.

“It certainly taxes our membership, we’re all volunteers and we save the town millions of dollars in taxes or they would have to pay for an ambulance service,” he said. “We are always in need of more members, especially as our numbers continue to grow up.”
