Letter: Yorktown Residents Should Question Fluoride Use

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — The Yorktown Daily Voice welcomes signed, original letters from its readers. They may be emailed to

This letter was written in response to an earlier submission by Yorktown resident and Mount Kisco-based dentist Carl Tegtmeier, who supports the fluoridation of Yorktown's water supply.

To the Editor:

States the opening first-sentence claim:

"[Fluoridation] ... something the town has been doing since 1965 without any controversy and without any problems to the public." If that claim has merit, then ironically, quick anecdotal evidence seems gratuitously provided possibly supporting numerous "lowering of IQ studies" (36 referenced at associated with chronic fluoride intake.

(Excuse please my tongue-in-cheek.) So, may I respectfully encourage your Yorktown readers and the editors to question absolutely everything – including the (unproven?) safety for artificially fluoridated water.

Such questioning could include especially some (dubious?) claims postured with seeming authority of safety and effectiveness in the dentist's letter.

And of course too to question what I've said.

On that closing note, I seriously question the ethic, safety and entire practice of adding so-called fluoride to our public drinking water supplies ... anywhere. Sincerely,

Gene Burke Founder, Santa Monicans for Safe Drinking Water Coalition
