David Acevedo had a task to complete in order to obtain his Eagle Scout award, and picked a project close to his heart.
Acevedo remembered his days at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School where his teacher would often run around frantically hours or days before one of their many blood drives to try and get the word out, and organize the event. For that reason, Acevedo, who is now 14 and a student at Lakeland High School, took it upon himself to help out.
Ill be coordinating all the volunteers from Lakeland, and the other troop members to make sure everything runs smoothly, he said.
While it was clear to him that he could help out in an area that needed assistance, it was Acevedos own family experiences that taught him the value in a blood drive.
My own grandfather needed five blood transfusions over the past year, and I really learned how important these are, he said. Before when I was in school our middle school held them every couple of months, but this taught me how much people really need them.
Acevedo joined the Boy Scouts in 2008, and said he needed to plan and run his own service project in order to get his Eagle Scout award. The blood drive will be held on Jan. 10 from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School.
