The South African-born, American singer-songwriter turns 50 on Jan. 9.
Matthews, best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band, and his parents moved to Yorktown Heights when he was two. His father, a physicist, worked for IBM.
Matthews started the band in Charlottesville, Va., in 1991. He has also done solo performances and produced records.
The band’s most recent album, “Away from the World,” was released in 2012 and made it the only group, according to Wikipedia, to have six consecutive studio albums that debuted at Number One on the Billboard charts.
Matthews has also gotten acting gigs and is the winner of two Grammy Awards.
He and his wife, Ashley Harper, have three children and live in Seattle.
