"Perhaps in years past while walking through the tents and exhibits at the Yorktown Grange Fair, you thought you could grow a bigger pumpkin or a prettier dahlia, bake a more delicious cake or cookie, take a better photo or knit a better scarf. If only you had planned ahead," said spokesperson David Humphrey in a news release. "Well now’s the time to start planning to enter any of the many competitions at the 89th Annual Yorktown Grange Fair, to be held Sept. 5 through Sept. 8."

From gardening, baking, photography, needlework, livestock, and even LEGOs constructions for the kids there are many opportunities to win a blue ribbon at this year's fair, Humphrey said in the release. There are no entry fees for any of the competitions, but many require some pre-planning.

The fair is also looking for volunteers at the "last truly agricultural fair in Westchester County (that) attracts more than 20,000 visitors each year," according to the release.

"As a community organization, we are in need of many volunteers to assist us in a variety of ways, especially on scheduled 'work days,'" Humphrey said in the release. "We want to reach out to local youth who are in need of completing community service hours required by schools, scouting, and religious organizations.  Volunteering for the Grange Association is a good experience, and is a confidence builder for youth to be able to work with the guidance of adult volunteers."

The scheduled “work days” are Aug. 17 and Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon, according to the release. The fair runs from Sept. 5 to Sept. 8. For more information, go to the fair's website.
