Yorktown Fire Department Kicks Off Annual Carnival

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Each year, Former Yorktown Fire Chief Martin McGannon is amazed at the support for the department's annual parade and carnival. And this year has been no exception.

McGannon said he was overwhelmed with pride as he walked through the streets of Yorktown in Wednesday evening's annual firefighters parade. The parade started the annual Fundraising Carnival for the department which kicked-off Wednesday and continues from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. through the week and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

"Our community has always been so supportive in Yorktown Heights, even when it rains during the parade and carnival," McGannon said Thursday. "They are always here for us and it really is something to be a part of great community like this."

The carnival is the major fund-raiser for the all-volunteer Yorktown Heights Engine Company No. 1 and without it, maintaining an adequate level of service would be difficult, McGannon said.

"It is huge what the community does for us so that we're able to give them excellent fire service every year," he said. "The community in Yorktown and in neighboring towns don't care if it's rain, snow or sleet, they pack the streets and that means so much for us."

The carnival, at Commerce Street and Veterans Road, provides rides, attractions, food and entertainment for families with 100 percent of proceeds going to the fire department. For more information, residents are asked to check out the Yorktown Heights Engine Company No. 1 website
